ABOUT PILATES

Joseph Pilates (1880-1967) created "Pilates" originally called "Contrology' in the early 20th century. He believed that "physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness". He founded his method on six fundamental principles:   Breathing, Centering, Concentration, Control, Flow, and Precision.

Pilates designed 500 mind-body movement exercises to develop strong, flexible muscles without bulk, which improved posture, reduced stressed and risk of injury.

STOTT PILATES method is based on modern principles of exercise science and rehabilitation. It uses Joseph Pilates' full repertoire of exercises and principles and applies the latest research, ensuring all exercises are taught safely and effectively for each client. Every session is based on the individual's posture, fitness levels and goals while teaching the 5 basic principles: Breathing, Pelvic Placement, Rib Cage Placement, Scapular Movement and Stabilization, Head & Cervical Placement.

Many doctors and physical therapists refer clients to Pilates to help strengthen core muscles and realign posture. Pilates also helps to realign the body particularly the neck, back, hips and knees relieving  pain. Most instructors have  even restored themselves using Pilates.

Back pain is commonly caused by weak core muscles and over tight back and hip flexor muscles, causing an imbalance in the body. Over time this stress of weak core muscles can cause injury and damage with over use. Pilates teaches you to connect and use your core muscles through building and realigning postural muscles.

Today followers such as dancers, athletes, physical therapists, fitness trainers and health care professionals continue to use Pilates.

Pilates has helped my clients to develop body awareness and assist them in understanding their mind-body connection.

MAT PILATES

Mat is the original Pilates design by Joseph Pilates and incorporates the five basic principles which are the foundation of postural realignment. Mat Pilates is a way to stretch and strengthen your body, primarily the muscles of the core.

Mat Pilates is where the foundational principles are taught and can be modified to accomodate a variety of phyisical needs.
